What Lines the Shelves

Of Our Gluten Free Pantry?

The following is a list of our favorite gluten free and

mainstream items that are also gluten free.   It is by no means exhaustive, but merely the best of the best to us.

Ingredients change faster that your child's favorite toy.  ALWAYS double check the ingredients!!

Some of the following are also "made on lines that also manufacture products containing gluten."  Whether or not you choose to eat these items is a matter of personal preference.  For us,

an occasional Cheetos is okay, but we try not to eat these types of foods all of the time.

Baking Items:

Birthday Cake Mixes: The following are our favorite cake mixes, in order of perference.  Top with home made frosting.

 Bread, Bagels, tortillas etc.

  • Necco Conversation Hearts your classic Valentine's Day treat are gluten free.
  • Hershey's.  As of February 2008, the only candy items Hershey's will confirm as being gluten free are the Hershey's plain milk chocolate bar, the Hershey's plain milk chocolate bar with almonds and the Hershey's Kisses Milk Chocolate Flavor. Note this is milk chocolate flavor only.   I tried to get a clarification on their labels and they informed me they will list all ingredients on the labels but not whether or not those ingredients contain gluten.  So if you see a label and are not sure that the ingredient contains gluten, you should call them at 1-800-468-1714 Monday – Friday 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET.

  • Glutino Lemon Wafers, Vanilla Dreams and Wafer Cookies Love all of these!!  One of our favorite cookies.  Made by Glutino. My Gluten Free Pantry Shopping List
  •   WOW Wheat and Gluten Free Cookies and Brownies These are the best of the best.  Large, soft and delicious.  Much like you would find at the local bakery.   At $2.50 a piece they are a special treat, but great to keep in the freezer for that birthday party at school that did not make your calendar.  The price reflects the quality of the ingredients - organic ingredients, high quality butter, and cane juice.  Made by WOW.

Crackers

  • Blue Diamond Almond Nut Thins

Pizza

  • Whole Foods Pizza Mix  A great thick crust pizza mix.  It is fairly easy to make and takes wonderful.  Here is a tip for helping any baked good rise. Preheat your oven to 200 degrees while you are mixing the dough together. Spread it on the pizza pans, do not cover it, turn the oven off and put the pans in the oven to let the dough rise.  Wait about 30 minutes and you will have a great pizza crust.

WHERE TO SHOP:

Shopping for gluten free food has gotten much easier.  Everyday local grocery and health food stores carry more and more gluten and casein free items.  However, we still have some favorites that we order over the web.

Web sites:

  • Amazon.com is a great resource for gluten free items.  They come in bulk, usually six to an order, so it is best to order items you know you like.  We tend to go through food pretty rapidly and I like to keep extra stashes of food on hand in case of an emergency (such as Mom gets sick), so I like ordering the bulk items.  As an extra bonus, you can usually receive free shipping.Go to My Amazon.com Shopping List
